VeriSign® Extended Validation (EV): An Overview

VeriSign® Extended Validation (EV) SSL Certificates can help simplify your online experience while also increasing security. Learn more below about what (EV) SSL Certificates are and why you should care.

What Are Extended Validation SSL Certificates?

Extended Validation (EV) helps you make sure a Web site is what it claims to be. EV refers to new, enhanced processes of validating Web sites before issuing a certificate. Users of certain high-security browsers will see visual cues that are triggered by the presence of an (EV) SSL Certificate. If you’re familiar with red-light/green-light intersections, you’ll understand the basic concept. Green tells you it’s safe and the site is legitimate. Red tells you to stop, usually because the site isn’t secure. Click here to see the (EV) demo >>

EV’s main goal is twofold:

  1. Restore user confidence in online transactions.
  2. Reduce the threat of phishing attacks. The CA Browser Forum—an alliance of organizations such as certification authorities, browser vendors, and the American Bar Association—worked to develop uniform guidelines for certificate issuance. That way, you can rest assured that Web sites secured with (EV) SSL Certificates have been authenticated in accordance with the standards of the CA Browser Forum, ensuring you that the sites are secure and legitimate.

Why Are (EV) SSL Certificates Being Implemented?

Malicious and suspicious online activity has dramatically increased in recent years, creating a heightened need for improved visibility of security. (EV) SSL Certificates empower you to better protect yourself online. It’s simple: when you feel secure, you’ll shop, transact, and bank online. When there’s any doubt, you won’t. VeriSign EV SSL Certificates are designed to give you that peace of mind.
